I wanted to drop a quick line to say that we were closed for Easter, but then my daughter read this to me from her Facebook page: I like to use a lot of long words to make myself sound photosynthesis. I chuckled, but then it made me think. Some of us can identify with the embarrassment of using a wrong word and others know those that try to sound important, but fluff it. The memorable incident in our family was my daughter asking for a new duvet cover because the colours on hers weren’t very audible any more.
There is a freedom in being a child of God. We don’t have to use long words to sound impressive because we know what we are and to whom we belong. No matter how important our jobs our or our high standing in the community, scripture is clear that there is no one righteous. We all have sinful hearts. I know your heart and you know mine. No amount of fancy words to make us sound sophisticated can cover that over.
The flip side of the coin is that we have the best and most relevant long words in our arsenal. We may have wicked hearts, but oh the joy that we know the justification that has been bestowed on us as a gift from a merciful God! The wicked heart is still very much there, but sin no longer has dominion – the Holy Spirit is busy with a sanctifying work. And, one day when he is finished with us, we will be glorified.
Justified, sanctified, glorified are beautiful words for us not because they are long and sound grand, but because of the depth of meaning they have for us. They tell what and who we really are in Christ. And if we have Christ we have everything! We don’t need long words to make us sound photosynthesis.
