We stock a lot of good books and a few truly great books. Yet if you go to the publisher web sites, every book published is truly amazing! For some insights into this, read Mark Jones’ article on the use of superlatives: http://www.reformation21.org/blog/2015/06/why-all-the-superlatives.php . Mark has written Antinomianism (paperback; 172 pages; R138) and The Christian’s Pocket Guide to Jesus Christ (paperback;64 pages; R45). We look forward to stocking his new book Knowing Christ, soon to be published by Banner of Truth.
Listen in: If you choose to listen rather than read, try the podcasts from Reformation21’s Mortification of Spin: http://www.mortificationofspin.org/mos/podcast .
Commitment: One of our authors, Richard Ganz, reflects on 35 years as a pastor http://www.richardganz.com/reflections-on-35-years/ . Richard’s book Psychobabble is sadly out of print, but 20 Controversies that almost Killed a Church is available (paperback; R106). His wife Nancy has written a commentary series for children based on the the first five books of the bible (paperbacks; prices from R63 – R100).
Discipleship: This seems to be the latest buzz word. We are often asked for discipleship material, but have few books on this topic. What are people looking for? I have always understood that a disciple is one who follows a leader and discipleship is the act of following. In the context of Christianity then, discipleship is Christian growth. We have plenty of books on that – the whole purpose of this ministry is to encourage Christian growth. Yet it seems that by asking for books on discipleship, people are wanting books on how to leads others to Christ or in Christ. Ultimately any book can be used for the basis of discussion and growth, but if you want something more specific, we have One-to-One Bible Reading by David Helm (paperback; R52; currently only available at Augustine) and the booklet Short Steps for Long Gains – Youth Edition by Virginia Grice (R22; available at both shops). Both of the titles are from Matthias Media. For further ideas and resources visit Matthias Media’s new web site http://gotherefor.com/index.php .
Left-overs: We have one of each of the following books that will not be stocked again (available at Good Neighbours):
• Firm Foundations Teachers Guide Book 1 by Trevor McIlwain. A4 format paperback; R65
• Firm Foundations Teachers Guide Book 2 by Trevor Mcilwain. AA Format; R220.
• The Ordinary Parent’s Guide to Teaching Reading by Jessie Wise and Sarah Buffintion. A4 format paperback; R275.
Thanks and a request: There are so many aspects to running this bookshop that the job is never done. As soon as we stock up on one title, we are out of stock of another and there is always something that should have been done yesterday. We appreciate all of our customers, but a special thanks to those who take the time to encourage us in the task. Please pray for us: that we stay focused and do a good job to the glory of God, and the the devil doesn’t hinder us.
